Guide Note: The United States Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Its two basic missions are:
- Protection the United States President (and his family, the Vice President, heads of state, and other important persons)
- Investigation of fraud crimes including the counterfeiting of United States currency.

- Initially created solely to stop the counterfeiting of money which was rampant after the end of the Civil War
- Existed under the Department of Treasury until 2003 when they moved under the new Department of Homeland Security
- Employs 3,200 agents (1,300 uniformed ones)
