- Original group consisted of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara, and his sister-in-law Maybelle Carter (who was also Sara's first cousin)
- The original group disbanded in 1943 when A.P. and Sara divorced
- Maybelle continued to perform with her daughters Anita, June, and Helen as "Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters" into the 1960s
- Maybelle and Sara reunited for a tour during the height of 1960s folks music popularity
- In 1987, June Carter Cash, Helen and Anita Carter along with June's daughter, Carlene Carter appeared as The Carter Family
- Joan Baez recorded several Carter Family songs on her early albums
- Bob Dylan changed the lyrics and reworked the time signature of "Wayworn Traveller" to create his most famous song, "The Times They Are A Changin"
- Woody Guthrie used the melody of "When This World's on Fire" to write "This Land Is Your Land"
