Guide Note: Uruguay's first left-wing head of state, Tabare Vasquez, won the presidential elections in October 2004. It was the first time for Uruguay that a president was elected who didn't belong to the National (Blanco) Party or the Colorado Party.

- 1972: Graduated as an oncology specialist
- 1990-1995: The Mayor of Montevideo
- 1996: He was elected leader of the centre-left Broad Front coalition (Frente Amplio in Spanish)
- 2004: Elected president on October 31st winning 50.5% of the total ballots
- 2006: He received a World Health Organization Award for his leadership on tobacco control
- 2007: In Nov, he approved the Metsa-Botnia pulp mill project & he eased the abortion laws in Uruguay
- 2008: In January, due to his popularity, the Frente Amplio coalition were asking for the immediate re-election of the President (forbidden under the present constitution)
