Sydney, home of the popular attractions, Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. In 1788, what is now Sydney Cove Arthur Phillip established the first colony in Australia, which was inhabited by Aborigines. The town was named after Thomas Townshned Lord Sydney, The British Home Secretary. The town was soon hit with a devastating disease which took out anywhere between 500 to 1000 residents of the town. In 1820, the number of Aborigines had dropped tremendously and Governor Macquire started to educate them on Christianity. Sydney was greatly affected by the Great Depression, however in 1934, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed and giving the town with a major attraction. The town was officially declared a city on July 20, 1842.
With the passing of World War II the cities population increased when people immigrated from Europe and Asia, bringing their culture with them.
