Guide Note: The Stars Band is a Canadian indie-pop band. The band was originally formed in Toronto, by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman. They later relocated to New York City then settled in Montreal.
They were nominated to receive a Juno Award in 2004 for Heart and in 2005 for Set Yourself on Fire in the Alternative Album of the Year category.
Stars Band's music has been described as being "beautiful & eloquent indie-pop". Their style has changed from an electronic-pop, as heard on their first album Nightsongs, to a more rock-based instrumentation on their last two full-length albums, accredited to the permanent additions of singer-guitarist Amy Millan and bassist Evan Cranley on Heart, and eventually drummer Pat McGee on Set Yourself on Fire.
Millan, Cranley, and Campbell are also members of the indie band Broken Social Scene. The two bands currently share the same record label, Arts & Crafts. Torquil Campbell is also an actor whom has appeared on such television shows as Sex & the City and Law & Order. Several of the bands songs, such as Your Ex-lover is Dead and The Vanishing, have appeared on the Fox Network's The OC and CTV's Degrassi: The Next Generation.
In 2007, they surprised their fans by releasing their album "In Our Bedroom After the War" two months before it's expected release date, for legal online download. In a post on Arts & Crafts site, Stars Band explained, “It’s our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.”
