Pop Idol was a reality show which ran on Britain's ITV network. It first aired on October 5, 2001 and lasted until December 20, 2003. The contestants competed for the chance at becoming the next pop singer and were judged by Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Nicki Chapman and Neil Fox. Contestants were eliminated based on having the lowest vote each week from viewer voting.

Pop Idol was the talent show that began all other reality shows similar in nature. Since 2001 when
Pop Idol first premiered, other shows such as
American Idol, Latin American Idol, Canadian Idol and many others have arrived on television. The Idol franchise was created by Simon Fuller.
