Periodontitis is caused by inflammation of a person's gums around their teeth. The majority of cases are mild but some patients suffer from more severe symptoms including loss of their teeth.

- Bad breath, called Halitosis
[edit] Periodontists or gum disease?
There is some confusion between Periodontitis and gum disease, since they are often referred to as one another. Gum disease is caused when their is any inflammation of the gums and there are different forms of gum disease. Periodontitis is one common form of gum disease that occurs when there is a bacterial infection in the gums. Although common, Periodontitis, can become a severe oral issue.

Prevention of Periodontitis can be started early on in life simply by practicing good oral hygiene. Also frequent dental checkups are important to prevent any form of gum disease. If Periodontitis is suspected there are many different options to stop the progression, one being debridement of the plaque or tarter along the gums.
