Guide Note:
Nightmare Creatures is a survival-horror game developed by Kalisto Entertainment and released on the PS, N64, and PC. The game was published by Activision and released on October 31, 1997. The game was often compared to Resident Evil, which was arguably the most successful survival-horror game of the time, in a negative fashion. Nightmare Creatures II was later released for the PS and the Sega Dreamcast.
Story
During the year 1666, the Brotherhood of Hecate, a devil-worshiping cult, attempts to create an elixir that will give them superhuman powers. Unfortunately for the Brotherhood and the rest of humanity, the experiment goes awry and a host of hellish creatures begin to walk the earth. The actual game takes place in 1834 London, with the actions of the Brotherhood in 1666 setting the stage for the plot. When sightings of London citizens mutating into repulsive monsters are reported, a mysterious book is deposited at the home of Ignatius Blackward. Blackward, a servant of God, finds out that the enigmatic tome belongs to none other than Samuel Pepys, a man who recorded the dark doings of the Brotherhood back in 1666. Now a man by the name of Adam Crowley has enlisted the Brotherhood in order to wreak havoc on not only London, but the entire world, and it is up to Blackward and the daughter of one of his colleagues, Nadia Franciscus, to thwart Crowley and his evil plans.
Gameplay
The game consists of sixteen levels, and follows the traditional survival-horror formula, where players must make it to the end of each level alive while vanquishing many undead foes. The great variety of creatures player will face range from standard zombies to Dockers, giant gorilla-like abominations. The player plays as either Nadia, a swordswoman, or Blackward, the monk with a staff. There are also several secondary weapons available to the player, such as: pistols, magic spells, and fire bombs. Players also have an adrenaline bar, which must be constantly maintained at high levels by killing enemies. If the adrenaline bar diminishes too much, the player will begin to lose health. In the N64 version, this feature could be turned on/off.
