Players can take control of their favorite hockey teams and players to attempt to win the Stanley Cup or face-off against other players in the multi-player mode. The control scheme has been redone since the previous game. Simpler controls have take the place of the complex controls of NHL 2K8.¹ Though, players that wish to use the complex controls can enable them in the options menu. One rather unique feature to NHL 2K9 is the Zamboni driving mini-game during intermissions.

[edit] Nintendo Wii Debut

NHL 2K9 is the first Ice Hockey game to be developed for the Wii. The graphics in the Wii version of the game are not the same quality compared to the other versions. The Wii's innovative control mechanisms might be considered to make up for the graphics quality. Players can use the Wiimote as a hockey stick when the are going in for a shot.
