  • January 25, 1924: Born
  • 1941: Plays one season with Ohio State University, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega
  • 1942: Drafted by the U.S. Army to fight in World War II and misses collegiate years of playing
  • 1946: Returns from war and joins the Cleveland Browns
  • 1950: Kicks a field goal in final seconds of NFL Championship game, leading Browns to victory
  • 1954: Named NFL player of the year
  • 1960: Misses the entire season due to back injury
  • 1961: Returns to team at the age of 37, playing only as a placekicker
  • 1967: Retires from the NFL
  • 1974: Enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
  • 1992: The Lou Groza Award was established by The Palm Beach County Sports Commission
  • 1999: Became ranked as number 99 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players
  • 2001: Inducted in to the Cleveland Browns legends, retiring his jersey number 76
