September 29, 1943 Born in Popow, Poland

  • 1967: Lech Walesa employed in the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk as an electrician.
  • 1969: Married Danuta Golos
  • 1970: Member of the illegal strike committee in Gdańsk Shipyard
  • 1976: Walesa was fired as a result of his activities as a shop steward
  • 1978: Walesa and others organized the illegal underground Free Trade Union of Pomerania
  • 1980: Walesa led the Gdansk Shipyard strike
  • 1981: December 11 Walesa was arrested and interned for 11 months
  • 1983 Lech Wałęsa awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1987 to 1990: Wałęsa organized and led, the Temporary Executive Committee of Solidarity Trade Union
  • 1989: Wałęsa organized and led the Citizenship Committee of the Chairman of Solidarity Trade Union
  • 1990: Walesa elected first noncommunist President
  • 1995: Wałęsa lost the Presidential Election and again in 2000
  • 2000 to Present: Lech Walesa continues to lecture on the history and politics of Central Europe
