Guide Note: The Kentucky Derby is the 1st leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, and run on the first Saturday in May. With a purse of $2 million dollars this has attracted horse breeders world wide. Kentucky with its Bluegrass and rolling hills make a perfect location for the racing and training. The race track is called Churchill Downs and has been racing in Kentucky since 1789.The Race has been called Run for the Roses as the winner receives a blanket of 554 red roses, which the Governor of Kentucky presents along with the Trophy. 80,000 Mint Juleps are served during a 2 day event. The Parade of Hats is the 2nd most entertaining parade next to the Kentucky Derby Post Parade.
