  • 1958: Enrolls in Stanford University's creative writing program
  • 1959: Volunteered for Project MKULTRA, a CIA sponsored research program
  • 1964: The Merry Pranksters travel across in country in their bus, "Furthur"
  • 1966: Arrested for possession of marijuana, fled to Mexico; subsequently spent 5 months in jail
  • 1994: Toured with the Merry Pranksters performing a musical he wrote
  • November 10, 2001: Died of cancer of the liver following surgery
