The most northern of the main Hawaii island chain, Kauai is the oldest of these main islands, estimated at over 5.1 million years old1. It's shoreline has a multitude of white sand beaches while the center of the island is mostly uninhabited and protected from development. One of the wettest spots on Earth, Kauai's center sees an average rainfall of 485 inches per year2.

The last of the islands to become part of King Kamehameha's Hawaiian Kingdom, Kauai proved challenging to conquer as the King's mission to unite all of Hawaii failed twice. Finally in 1810 Kauai joined in the unification of the islands through a peaceable agreement between Kauai's ruler, Kaumualii and Kamehameha

In January, 1778 Captain James Cook landed in Waimea Bay on Kauai's West side, which brought widespread awareness of the islands to Westerners for the first time6 .

Kauai sees approximately 1.2 million visitors to the island each year
7 (estimated 2007). Because of its rural landscape and abundance of beaches, the island tends to draw vacationers desiring natural beauty
