An infection is a condition where the body is invaded by microorganisms or germs that multiply and damage the surrounding tissue. Infections can spread throughout the body or stay contained in a particular area. The organisms that can lead to an infection include bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa, or viral.1 2 3

- Bacteria: one-celled germs which multiply quickly and may release harmful toxins that make a person sick7
- Fungi: Molds, yeasts and mushrooms are types of fungi and live in the air, water, soil and on plants.8
- Protozoa: Single-celled organisms that live within the body a parasite. They live in food, soil, water or insects. Infection comes from eating contaminated food, drinking water which is contaminated, bug bites or sexual contact9
- Viral: Viruses are encapsulated genetic material, invading healthy, living cells and use these cells to multiply and produce viruses like themselves.10
