Guide Note:
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is the largest visible-light observatory ever launched into orbit. Its position outside Earth's atmosphere allows it to obtain images much more detailed than ground-based telescopes, becoming one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy.
Fast Facts:
- Built from 1978 to 1990 at a cost of 1.5 billion dollars
- The project is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency
- Hubble's primary mirror has 2.4 meters in diameter
- It's located at 589 kilometers above Earth and completes one orbit once every 96 minutes
- STScI is responsible for the scientific operation and delivery of data products to astronomers
- More than 4,000 scientific papers based on Hubble data have been published
- HST's Ultra Deep Field is the most sensitive astronomical optical image ever taken
