- 1901: April 29, Prince Michi, known in the west a Hirohito is born to Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei
- 1908-1914: Hirohito attends Gakushuin Peers School
- 1912: July 30, Emperor Meiji dies, making Hirohito heir apparent
- 1914-1921: Attends the Tōgū-gogakumonsho, a special institute for the crown prince
- 1916: November 2, Hirohito is named crown prince
