• The Greenhouse Guide Tool helps Part Time Guides create the best possible SeRPs.

• Download the tool here.

• Drag and drop the file into any open window on your Firefox browser. You can download Firefox here.
  • If you're not already using Firefox as your primary browser, we highly recommend it. Firefox's tabbed browsing makes opening links easy. Plus Firefox is customizable with add-ons that extend its functionality.

[edit] Guide Tool Use

• The Guide Tool automates putting a link into a Greenhouse page.

1. Create the page as you normally would, by opening the page and loading in a template.
   • Rename the page's sections before using the tool; the tool remembers what the sections are from the first time it is used.
2. As usual, search the web for great links about your topic.
3. For example, if you are working on a page about Cottage Cheese and want to add the Wikipedia page on Cottage Cheese to your SeRP:
4. Press Control-Shift-M (Windows) or Apple-Shift-M (Mac)
5. A window will pop up:
6. Check that the window has the correct SeRP title (if the wrong page name appears, just type the right name in the SeRP box and hit return)
   • WARNING: Make sure you are adding links to the right SeRP! The Guide Tool will open whatever SeRP you were last looking at. If you glance at another page in Greenhouse, the Guide Tool may try to add links to that page.
     
7. Select the section you would like the link to appear in, i.e. "The Mahalo Top 7"
8. In Pretext type Wikipedia
9. In Title type Cottage Cheese
10. In Description type <c>Matt: Wow, great page on cottage cheese!</c> - this will add a shaka (choice tag)
11. Click Add URL and the link will automatically be added to your SeRP (in the correct format)!

• For other links, you can type the year of an article or add warning tags in the Description box:
  • To add a warning tag, scroll through the warnings at the bottom of the pop-up window and choose the appropriate one

• Make sure you are adding links to the right SeRP! The Guide Tool will open whatever SeRP you were last looking at. If you glance at another page in Greenhouse, the Guide Tool may try to add links to that page.
  • If the wrong page name appears, just type the right name in the SeRP box and hit return.
• Label your sections before using the tool; the tool remembers what the sections are from the first time it is used.
• Make sure you know how the site should be referenced. The Guide Tool will automatically grab information from the top of your browser about the site. You may have to change some of this information manually.
  • For example, the Guide Tool will bring up "Barnes & Noble.com" when linking to bn.com, but you will want to change this to just "Barnes & Noble".

[edit] Guide Tool Troubleshooting

• Very important: The guide tool will add the link to whatever SeRP was last loaded, unless you manually change the name of the SeRP in the correct box on the tool. Only have open the SeRP you are working on to avoid having to go into a different SeRP and fix a link.

• If you change section titles or order and the tool is not recognizing the changes, you should restart your browser and try again.

• The tool does not recognize any special characters. If you are working on a SeRP with an apostrophe, parentheses, etc. in the title, you will need to manually type the title into the SeRP box in order for it to recognize your sections. It is sometimes easier to add links by hand when you have special characters in the title of your SeRP.

• If the tool says you aren't logged in to Mahalo, or is having any other difficultly letting you use it there are a few things you can try:

1. Make sure you are logged in to the Greenhouse site
2. Do a hard refresh, clearing your cache and your cookies
3. Restart Firefox
4. Restart your computer
5. Uninstall and reinstall the tool
