  • 1896: Born on December 1 in Strelkovka, Russia.
  • 1915: Is drafted into the army of the Russian Empire.
  • 1917: Joins the Bolshevik party.
  • 1918-1921: Fights in the Russian Civil War.
  • 1939: Achieves a decisive victory against Japan in the Battle of Khalkhin Ghol.
  • 1941: Takes command of the central front near Moscow.
  • 1942-1943: Encircles the Germans at Stalingrad, leading to the capture of the German Sixth Army.
  • 1944: Lifts the siege of Leningrad.
  • 1945: Launches the Soviet assault on Berlin.
  • 1945: Has a falling-out with Joseph Stalin.
  • 1953: Is promoted to Deputy Defense Minister following Stalin's death.
  • 1955: Is promoted to Defense Minister.
  • 1957: Nikita Khrushchev removes him as Defense Minister, due to disagreements over military policy.
