[edit] Economic History
By 1876, the railways and oil fields were increasing Fort Worth's participation in commercial trade. After the Civil War, cowboys began rounding up longhorns and drove them north into Fort Worth. This is how the city received the nickname "Cowtown." Although oil has continuously been a part of Fort Worth's economy, in the 1980s it's economy started to suffer because of the decrease in oil production. However with the newly built airport, production of beef, and thriving tourism, the economy rebounded.1
