Guide Note: Cincinnati is located in southwest Ohio on the Ohio River. An area just outside the city limits is one of the largest districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Cincinnati was named after a Roman General, Cincinnatus. The city was incorporated in the early 1800s. It grew quickly after the invention of steamboats that could travel the Ohio River and the Erie Canal. By the end of the 1800s, Cincinnati had established a streetcar system and developed a baseball team called The Cincinnati Red Stockings. Proctor & Gamble was one of the area's first factories, producing Ivory Soap. Cincinnati leaders and developers are in the planning stages to restore the streetcar system, to be started in 2010. The cost would be approximately $102 million to build and will include several stops and trolley cars along a four mile stretch during the first phase to establish faster transit within the busy downtown area.
