Burke grew up with four brothers and one sister, and her parents split up when she was five years old. She has had no training for her singing, she learned from her mother and by just listening to music. At nine she sang with her mother on stage, and knew then that she wanted to become a singer.7

In 2005, Burke auditioned for the talent show The X Factor, and made it to the top seven. In 2008, she auditioned again for the same talent show and won. Since then, she has performed with Elton John, at his concert on New Years Eve.5 Burke holds the record for the most sales of a single song for a twenty-four hour period. Her song Hallelujah sold over a hundred thousand copies, and was the number one Christmas single.2 In 2009, Burke is scheduled to go on tour with X Factor Live through March.8

The prize Burke won for winning the talent show was a recording contract, with Simon Cowell's record label.2
